Outboard Motor Serial Number Lookup — Find Your Year & Model

Found an old outboard and not sure what year it is? Your serial number holds the answer. Use the brand guides below to decode your motor's year and model — then grab the right service manual so you can actually work on it.

First, which number do you have?

A motor serial/model number identifies the engine. A boat HIN identifies the vessel. They are not interchangeable.

People often say “boat VIN,” but the vessel identifier is called a HIN.

Mercury & Mariner Outboard Serial Number Lookup

    Where to find it

Your Mercury serial number is on a metal ID tag or instruction plate on the transom bracket (swivel bracket), either side. On some models, it's also between the thumb screws above the steering tube.

    How to decode the year

    1996 and newer:

Look for a small box in the bottom-right corner of the ID label. The 2-digit number inside equals the model year. For example: 10 = 2010, 98 = 1998. That's it — no chart needed.

    Pre-1996:

Pre-1996 Mercury motors use the model number (not serial number) to determine the year. The model number appears just below the serial number on the same tag. Contact a Mercury dealer or visit marineengine.com/mfr/mercury_models.html with your model number.
